Biography

Benard Lekura ole Morintat is an experienced Power Systems Engineer with over 10 years experience and with a strong background in Design, Business Development and Construction as well as Infrastructure Development within the Power industry. Proficient in power systems design, including electrical substations, transmission lines, and distribution networks, ensuring system reliability and adherence to industry standards. I am skilled in conducting load flow studies, fault analyses, and voltage stability assessments to optimize system performance and enhance reliability. Demonstrated expertise in revenue protection as an Electrical Energy Revenue Protection Unit Engineer, implementing measures to prevent energy theft and resolving billing discrepancies to ensure accurate metering and revenue collection.

Experienced in project management, successfully overseeing power system projects from inception to completion, with a proven ability to define project scopes, develop schedules, and coordinate resources while ensuring compliance with technical specifications and regulatory requirements. I am adept in technical documentation and reporting, preparing comprehensive reports, and collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams. Excellent stakeholder management skills, establishing strong relationships, and ensuring effective communication throughout the project lifecycle. I am a graduate of International Master of Business Administration from Buckinghamshire New University, a Postgraduate OTHM Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership from Edubex, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from University of Nairobi.

I have served in various leadership and advisory roles within the engineering ecosystem, including as Chairperson of the Industry Advisory Committee (RVIST), a member of multiple IEK committees, and an active contributor to STEM and professional development initiatives. My experience engaging academic institutions, government entities, contractors, students, and professional engineers positions me well to strengthen IEEE Kenya’s mission of advancing technology for societal benefit.

I am passionate about empowering the next generation of engineers, promoting emerging technologies, and fostering stronger collaboration between academia, industry, and government. My professional background spans smart grids, decentralized energy systems, renewable energy integration, system planning, and large-scale power infrastructure—areas that align closely with IEEE’s global priorities.

Position Statement – Vice Chair

My vision for the IEEE Kenya Section is to cultivate a dynamic, inclusive, and future-focused engineering community that inspires innovation, strengthens professional capacity, and advances technology for societal benefit. I aim to position the Section as a national leader in promoting emerging technologies, supporting the next generation of engineers, strengthening academia-industry collaboration, and amplifying Kenya’s contribution to global engineering and research. By leveraging the expertise of our volunteers and the opportunities within Kenya’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, I envision a Section that delivers exceptional value to its members, enhances visibility, and drives impact at local, regional, and global levels.

Action Plan

To achieve this vision, I will:

  1. Strengthen Membership and Volunteer Growth
  • Enhance value for students, Young Professionals, Women in Engineering (WIE), and early-career members through mentorship, training, and recognition.
  • Support STEM outreach, university chapters, and community-based engineering initiatives to grow a strong pipeline of future IEEE leaders.
  1. Promote Technical Advancement and Innovation
  • Encourage collaboration across chapters in areas such as renewable energy, smart grids, AI, IoT, and emerging technologies.
  • Support technical workshops, distinguished lecture programs, hackathons, industry forums, and knowledge-sharing platforms.
  1. Deepen Academia–Industry–Government Partnerships
  • Build stronger engagement with universities, industries, government agencies, and development partners for joint research, training, and capacity-building.
  • Leverage industry insights to inform IEEE programmes and align Section activities with national development priorities.
  1. Strengthen Governance, Transparency, and Operational Excellence
  • Uphold best practices from past leaders while promoting fair, transparent, and collaborative decision-making.
  • Enhance efficiency in resource management, planning processes, and stakeholder communication.
  1. Recognize and Support Volunteers
  • Promote a culture of appreciation by honouring outstanding contributions and learning from the experience of senior and life members.
  • Provide platforms for volunteers to lead, grow, and contribute meaningfully to the Section’s mission.

Commitment

If entrusted with the role of Vice Chair, I will dedicate my full energy, professionalism, and leadership to supporting our volunteers and strengthening the Section’s impact across Kenya. I will work collaboratively with the Chair, Executive Committee, chapter leaders, and members to advance IEEE’s mission of “Advancing Technology for Humanity.” My employer is supportive of my volunteer commitments and has agreed to allow the flexibility required for me to execute this role effectively. 

I commit to assist the Chair in the coordination of all Section activities, at the request of the Section Chair or in the absence of the Section Chair, shall chair meetings of the Section, Section Committee, or Section ExCom and undertake any such other duties as are assigned to him/her by the ExCom.
